Dons boss Karl Robinson ran on to frantically get Yorkshire-born Smith to the safety of the tunnel.
Robinson said: “Alan was punched, kicked, spat at — the lot. I ran on and had to push supporters off him.
“I thought I might be able to calm things down. But one or two mindless idiots have spoiled what was a wonderful game.
“English football has moved on immensely and scenes like that aren’t great.”
Huddersfield, who will now play Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United in the League One play-off final on May 26, went ahead with striker Jordan Rhodes’ 40th of the season.

Daniel Powell’s 20-yard shot levelled it and Smith scored two minutes into stoppage time with a far-post diving header.
Dons manager Robinson added: “I’m gutted because we deserved more than we got.”
Terriers chief Simon Grayson said: “You could see the scenario of Alan coming on and scoring. Fortunately there were only two minutes to go but you know what can happen in two minutes.”
